I’m so happy to say that I finally finished my makeover of this vanity and mirror that I showed last summer in this thrifted finds post. I’m actually not sure if it’s a vanity, a desk, or a dresser, but for this post I’m calling it a vanity. Whatever it is it’s definitely child sized.
I took out the screws from behind the mirror and removed the mirror so I could paint the frame more easily. I used Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start Primer. It’s a high adhesion primer, and it’s what I had on hand. The mirror had a plastic wood grain finish and it took the primer really well. I spray painted the metal drawer pulls with a spray primer and Rustoleum’s Ultra Cover White.
The vanity was in good shape structurally, but it needed a lot of cleaning up. Luckily someone had already taken it down to the wood and done a lot of sanding so I just had to finish the job. I actually started this makeover last summer, but couldn’t make up my mind what exactly I wanted to do with the pieces.
I applied wood filler where needed, and once it had dried I sanded it very well with my electric sander.
I gave all the drawer fronts a good sanding, and the insides of the drawers a good cleaning.
I painted the drawer fronts with a pink latex Oops paint that I got at the ReStore. The quart was just $3. I then reattached the drawer pulls.
I lined the drawers with cardboard covered fabric rectangles that I cut to fit. This way they can be easily changed in the future. All six drawers are lined. I also decided to paint the sides of the drawers, inside and out, with the white paint.
Here’s the vanity with two coats of a Dulux white Ooops latex paint that I also got at the ReStore. A whole gallon for just $10. A great deal! I’ve already used it on a few other projects and I still have 2/3 of the can left.
I thought about doing some stencilling or something else decorative on the top, but I kind of liked the freshness of the white.
I painted the mirror with the same pink paint, and here’s my finished vanity and mirror. They didn’t start as a matched set, but I think they look great together.
I’m planning to try to sell this set on Kijiji. I would just love it if it became a part of some little girl’s childhood memories. That would be an amazing thing!
