DIY Canister Makeover

I don’t know about you but I can always use more storage, and this canister makeover is an easy way to give something old and a little beaten up a whole new life.

Storage doesn’t just have to be just practical, it can be fun and colorful too.

It’s Thrifty Chicks project challenge time!

These are the before pics of this month’s challenge.

Thrifty Chicks Canister, Buckets, Pails project challenge

On the second Wednesday of each month I join some very talented blogging friends for a project challenge, and with a different theme each time it’s really a lot of fun. If you missed any of the past projects you can find them here.

I’m so excited to see what my blogging friends have come up with for this canister/pails/buckets challenge. You’ll find links to their projects at the end of this post. Be sure to visit and check out the fabulousness.

First I’ll share my project with you.

metal canister makeover with plastic woven rope

This old metal canister was on its way to the thrift store.

It was actually in a box, ready to go when I rescued it for this project challenge.

It’s not in great shape, which makes it perfect for this canister makeover.

I’ve had these plastic woven ropes that I’m using for this project for a few years.

I saw them at a dollar store and couldn’t resist the colors. They’ve been in my craft room waiting to be used.

They don’t seem all that strong to me so I really have no idea what they’d be used for, but they’re perfect for this project.

DIY Canister Makeover with Ropes

gluing rope onto metal canister starting at the top

I started this makeover by hot gluing the blue rope onto the canister starting at the back and at the top, just under the lip.

The reason for starting at the top instead of the bottom was I wanted to make sure the top was nice and neat.

It would be easier to fix the bottom if I ended unevenly.

Then I made my way around and around and around.

Until the canister was done.

And, thankfully, the rope went around the bottom quite nicely.

Then I did the top with the yellow rope, starting  at the bottom of the rim of the lid… working my way up, and then over the top.

DIY Canister Makeover with Rope Flowers

flower created with hot glue and plastic blue woven rope

I am a flower-loving girl so I decorated my canister with some easy rope flowers, which I made just by gluing pieces of rope on the backs of buttons.

This rope and button flower was glued onto the top of the lid, and I added just a little bead of glue to each petal to hold them in place.

Then I created a yellow flower with a red button center for the front of my canister.

And two red flowers with yellow button centers for the sides.

The flowers don’t have to be perfect.

The lid is still perfectly functional, and this canister could be used to store many things.

Right now my new canister is sitting in the china cabinet, and it’s holding various napkin rings.

It’s a perfect accent piece for my aqua and red, with accents of yellow, kitchen.

And it goes nicely with my Crown Dynasty dinnerware.

This was a pretty easy project, and any canister could be given a makeover like this.

I love it! It looks like coloured rattan rather than rope and it also displays wonderfully with your dishes.!

Wow, Tuula this is just SO cute! I adore the little flowers on it, and what a great use of twine you’ve had around for awhile. You always come up with such unique ideas.
