Quick & Easy Tree Ornaments

I’m always looking for fun ways to create quick and easy tree ornaments, and when I saw some very festive straws at the dollar store an idea immediately came to mind.

These are also very inexpensive, which is always a good thing

Red green and white straws for diy tree ornaments

A light bulb went off, and these colorful straws practically jumped into my shopping basket.

Yes, that’s exactly how it happened. (wink wink)

The large straws in the middle are plastic, and the packs on either side are paper.

Red and green just sing Christmas to me, and I find that colorful things tend to inspire me more that most other things.

I’ve had a love for polka dots since childhood, and I never really grew out of it.

Not that I’ve been trying very hard. Or at all. lol.

Putting Together Straw Tree Ornaments

cut paper straws into Christmas tree shape for diy ornaments project

These DIY tree ornaments really couldn’t be easier to make.

You just cut the straws into staggering lengths to create a tree shape.

I just hold each straw to the previous one and cut as I go. You could certainly measure as you go if you want to. Or you could cut a triangle out of cardboard and use that as your guide.

But I’m an eyeball it and wing it kinda gal.

flattening paper straw to use as Christmas tree ornament stem

Once you have all your pieces cut and ready, you need a stem to hold it all together.

These paper straws are super easy to flatten, so that’s what I did.

Attaching stem onto back of tree ornaments

Hot gluing flattened paper straw onto back of tree shaped straws

Hold the stem against the tree to get the length, and mark with a pencil so you know how far to go down the stem with the glue.

Then apply hot glue to the stem down to the pencil line.

Make sure all your straws are set up the way you want them.

Then place your stem straw right onto the tree straws and press down lightly so you get good contact with every straw.

When the stem is in place, run hot glue down either side of the stem straw for extra stability.

Here’s one being created with the green and white plastic straws.

When my quick and easy tree ornaments were all done I glued some jute twine onto their backs for hangers.

Jute twine is one of my all time favorite things and I use it all the time. It’s classic and timeless, and goes with any design style and color preference.

To top off my tree ornaments I had some little poinsettia flower decorations, also from the dollar store.

But anything that you happen to have in your stash could be used.

These are so fun and colorful and didn’t take very long to make at all.

These DIY pencil crayon tree ornaments that I made last year are just as fun and colorful but they’re quite a bit more labor intensive.

If you’re looking for something quicker and easier these tree ornaments made from repurposed straws are a great alternative.

Being a girl who loves color, the red and green one is my favorite.

But I also love how the two green ornaments make the red poinsettia toppers pop.

Supplies needed for this project

  • Colorful plastic or paper Christmas straws
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • decorative anything for tree topper
  • jute twine for hanging
  • scissors
  • pencil

Quick & easy DIY Tree ornaments

These quick and easy tree ornaments would be a fun addition to any Christmas tree.

They can easily be customized for any tree depending on the colors and patterns of straws that you use.

I hope you enjoyed this fun and festive project!

Thanks so much for reading and until next time,

keep on keepin’ on!

Your straw Christmas trees are so pretty, Tuula! This would be a fun craft project to do with my grandson. Plus they are unbreakable, which is a good thing for their tree. LOL
