A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Paint Store
I spent the weekend painting my vintage kitchen cupboards… and I do mean all weekend.
It was a job and a half, but I loved every second of it. It was so fun to see the how the new colour was literally bringing my kitchen back to life one cupboard at a time right before my eyes. 🙂
And I love the new colour.
What colour is it you may ask?
Well, remember how I said in my vintage kitchen makeover adverture begins post… and I quote:
“To me room makeovers have always felt kinda like road trips, which I love by the way. I always have some idea about what I want to do and where I want to go, but I’m open to changes along the way.”
Well, there’s already been a slight detour. lol.
Last Monday I showed you my inspiration vintage mixer and some colour chips and I said I was leaning toward the aqua/turquoise in the middle.
When I left for the paint store I had every intention to get a gallon of that paint. It’s called Andes Sky.
But on the way something funny happened… it occurred to me that it was a bit too much on the green side of aqua/turquouse… and I really wanted to be on the blue side.
So I walked into the paint store having no idea what I was going to pick, but I was definitely picking something because I was painting the cupboards on the weekend no matter what.
I walked right over to the paint display and immediately fell in love, and without even bringing the chip home first to see how it looked in the my kitchen I went for it.
Here’s a sneak peak. I’ll share more when all the painting is done.
The 9 year old sagey green before.
This is the first cabinet I always paint because it’s between the white fridge and stove and gives me a good idea of what the paint will look like on the rest of the cupboards.
And the Enchanted Evening after. I love that name! It’s by Beauti-tone, and it was on sale for $30 so with tax it was $34.
It’s definitely more of a blue aqua/turquoise and I love love love it. It really has a retro feel to me.
I finished all the cabinets and just have the trim around the doorways and a couple of doors to do during the evening this week. Then next weekend I’ll be painting the walls and ceiling.
Oh what fun that will be. lol.
One thing I’ve learned from this experience is that I always seem to make better decisions when I fly by the seat of my pants. Just going with my gut instinct.
I think I was trying too hard to match the mixer colour to a tee, and forgetting that loving the colour is the most important thing. Just because the mixer is my inspiration doesn’t mean I have to match it 100% perfectly. I’m still in the aqua/turquoise neighbourhood, but in a brighter and bluer way. My vintage mixer will still feel right at home.
Thinking too much can sometimes get me into trouble. I’ll definitely have to try to stop doing that. 🙂
So what do you think of the colour? Isn’t it happy?
Thanks so much for reading and until next time…
Looks great! Love the color, very cheerful 🙂
Thanks Mother Deer! It is a very happy colour.
OMG. I Absolutely Love, Love that color. More so than the first you picked out. Your first choice was nice but . . . This color………Stunning and much more bright and cheerful.
Shoot, I fly by the seat of my pants most of the time. :}
Great Job. I can’t wait till your kitchen is finished and able to see the Big reveal.
Thanks Colleen! I usually fly by the seat of my pants too, but for some reason this time I got hung up on matching the mixer perfectly. I’m much happier now that I went with the bluer aqua.
Beautiful! And look at those new red oven mitts peeking over the top! I’m loving it!
Thanks Linda! Yes, I thought I’d throw a sneak peek of a red accent too. The blue goes beautifully with red. Now I’m on the hunt for more red treasures.
Very pretty tuula! I hardly ever take paint chips home first. I have an idea what I want and I just pick when I get there! So far my gut hasn’t steered me wrong!
Tania
Thanks Tania! I should have trusted my gut this time too, but I guess in the end I did because I changed my mind and I’m very happy I did.
My motto: fly by the seat of your pants or crash and start over!
Love the color!
Fly Tulu fly!
haha. Too funny. I’ve crashed a couple of times over the years, but it’s only paint so it wasn’t too much of a disaster. I seem to remember some bagged stairs that turned out terrible.. back in the faux finish days. lol. We’ve all had them I guess.
Great color and love that you just went with your gut on this one. Very pretty. I cannot wait to see your whole kitchen done. Have fun on this exciting re do.
xoxo
Kris
Thanks Kris! I’m discovering that the older I get the more I’m loving retro mid-century decor. Who knows where this new knowledge could lead. lol.
That is the perfect shade of aqua. I love it. Wow, you are going retro and it is looking fine!
Thanks AnnMarie! It is such a pretty colour, and looks great with red. I am going for it… the retro look all the way. As far as I can take it anyway. 🙂
It’s amazing what a layer of paint can do to an entire room! I used the color from your previous choices on the left for my dining-room-turned-library. I love it. In certain light, it glows and makes the ceiling look the same color. I’ve never painted a room so bold before! It’s refreshing and new!
No doubt it took you all weekend to paint your cupboards and trims! I find that I’m so interested in seeing how it looks that I want to whiz through the painting process {which, for best results, shouldn’t be done!}. I tuckered out near the end of my painting project, and I have less than stellar results. The next space — the living room — is much larger, so I will probably have to break it down and rest in between spaces. It’s so exciting to see a room go from one color to the next!
I can’t wait to see the full results! Thank you for sharing with us!
Thanks Fonda! I’m always amazed at how a change in paint colour can change the whole feel of a room. I feel like I’m getting a new kitchen at a fraction of the cost. It’s going to be fun to find accent pieces for it and linens etc. I’m rather a slow painter and love to listen to music while I paint, classic rock all the way. But whatever kind of music someone is into, it does make painting much more fun. Good luck with the living room. 🙂
I know what you mean about thinking to much, Ha! I love the color
Thanks Koleta! The kitchen is certainly much brighter now, and there’s something happy and calming about the colour at the same time.
Oh that color is wonderful and will be fabulous with red! Great choice 😉
Thanks so much Cecilia! I’m sooooo happy with it. I’m glad I’m never afraid to change my mind at the 11th hour. It’s a blogger’s prerogative. 🙂
Love, love, love that color. It is so pretty. I can not wait to see the rest.
Thanks very much Lynn. 🙂
Whoa….that is going to look awesome Tuula. What a bright new change just from paint!
Thanks so much Karen! I’m always amazed at what a little paint will do.
I IM’ed some pictures to you via Facebook. I couldn’t figure out any other way to get them to you. Hobby Lobby has a new turquoise and red line of kitchen/home products on the shelves. 40% off right now.
Thanks for thinking of me Karen, but I’m in the boonies of midwestern Ontario and I don’t think there are any HL’s here.
Love, love, love it!! Your kitchen is gonna be awesome!!! Dona
Thanks Dona! I hope you’re right. I have to say I do love the colour. 🙂
Great job choosing that color. I love it! Of course you already knew that since I paint furniture that color many times.
Thanks Donna! Yes I knew that. 🙂 It’s such a fab colour. I can’t wait to share my Enchanted Evening kitchen.
It’s such a happy color! I can’t wait to see the rest. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks Jann! I’m really enjoying this room makeover. It’s long overdue.
Such a cheerful color Tuula. Your kitchen is going to look just terrific when you’re through. Thanks so much for linking up your renovations with us at Vintage Charm 🙂
Thanks so much Diana! It’s always a pleasure to join in the fun. 🙂
