Garden Plate Flower Giveaway

UPDATE:  This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Comment #14, AnnMarie. You have been emailed.

Can you believe today is the last day of August? I certainly can’t.

Before summer is officially gone I wanted to have another garden art giveaway. This time one of you can win this one of a kind plate flower that I made out of thrifted finds.

red plate flower 1

I made this plate flower starting with a large 10″ silver plate serving tray as the back. It has a fabulous edging of grape bunches and leaves.

Then for some colour I added a lovely hobnail-like scallopped red glass dish, and a small silver plate dish inside that adds some sparkle.

Red and Silver Garden Plate Flower

To make it look like a fluted flower I added a clear glass candle holder….

and inside the candle holder there’s a black and clear rhinestone earring that adds a little bling to the centre of the plate flower. Because there’s always room for a little bling.

A bent tablespoon adhered to the back makes it easy to slip this flower into a pipe for displaying in the garden.

I use 3/4″ copper piping for mine, and I push it into the ground about 10-12″ so it can withstand the wind. Copper pipe can be found at any big box home improvement store, or any type of pipe that fits the spoon can be used.

A copper flange will be included just in case the winner prefers to hang this plate flower on a fence or a wall. The spoon on the back fits nicely over this flange.

So it looks like this.

All you have to do to enter this giveaway is leave me a comment on this site saying what you love most about summer.

That’s it!

This giveaway will be open until 12 midnight on Friday, September 4th. The winner will be randomly chosen and announced on this post on Sunday, September 6th. Open to the U.S. and Canada only. ( I’m so sorry, but it’s just too expensive for me to ship internationally.)

UPDATE:  This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Comment #14, AnnMarie. You have been emailed.

Thanks so much for reading, and I wish everyone the best of luck.

  4. Honestly, Tuula, I don’t know how you can stand to give this away! It’s so beautiful! What I love about summer. Hmmm. Living in AZ, that’s a hard one. I love that life pulls back, things quiet down. Flowers still bloom and the hummingbirds are out in force. But the people tend to stay inside. There’s less traffic. And best of all, there’s the expectation of fall being just around the corner!

  5. Valerie Zagami says:

I love your website and emails as they inspire me to have more fun in decorating. Thanks for the opportunity to try and be chosen for a most lovely garden or inside accent.

What I love most about summer: two family reunions including our out of town daughters, crepe myrtles, fresh tomatoes and veggies from the garden, mocking birds singing, humming birds, yard sales, sitting on the porch, Church Day Out service and picnic, our flowers and elephant ears, after teaching for 42 years–NOT going back to school in August! These are a few of my favorite things!

I LOVE IT. YOUR RUBY RED DISH LOOKS JUST LIKE MY ‘FENTON’ GLASS BOWL. IS IT? BEAUTIFUL IDEA.

    1. I’m not sure Clinita. The red glass dish isn’t marked so I can’t honestly say if it’s Fenton or not, but whatever it is it’s a beautiful ruby red.

  13. ColleenB. says:

What I love most about summer…………….it sure Isn’t the Texas heat that’s for sure but I do enjoy watching the birds coming to the feeders and taking a bath in their bird bath watering holes and especially love watching the hummingbirds coming to their feeders. I do enjoy working out in my flower beds providing it isn’t 100 deg. out.
    Thank you for this wonderful and beautiful giveaway. The plate flower is Gorgeous and be more beautiful yet if it where in my iris flower bed :}

  14. Oh, that red is my color! Love the garden flower…..what a great giveaway! What I love most about summer is the ever changing colors and blooms of my gardens, from the small sprouts of grape hyacinths in Spring to the pretty white delicate flowers of Sweet Autumn clematis in September.

  15. You are so talented! Where I would see plates and trays, you see gorgeous flowers and then you create them! Cheers to you.

  16. StrangeSkye says:

Summer is my least favorite month just because I hate the heat, but I will say it’s nice to get a few months during which I don’t have to stress about college!

  17. Frances McKay says:

living here in the Pacific Northwest we usually have long winters and short summers so I always look forward to the sunshine and the chance to eat out doors. Watching the birds use the birdbath I made and eat out of the teacup feeders that I made using the directions on your site is a favorite pastime. Your plate flower is beautiful and I love the bright red fluted bowl. Thanks for the chance to be in your drawing! A dedicated reader! Fran

This flower is so pretty. I’m crossing my fingers! I love summer because of the heat. I don’t like being cold and love the bright sunshine. I also like using my clothesline and hanging sheets, towels and whites outside in the summer.

  21. Here in Alabama I am not really fond of summer. It is hot and humid. When I was teaching I loved the summer time off but now that I can enjoy fall and spring, summer is not my favorite.

  22. Hi Tuula I am a summer girl. I love summers here in the Midwest. Love to have my flowers and my deck sanctuary to spend time in. Your garden flowers are gorgeous.
    Happy New Week.
    Kris

  23. Tuula,
I love everything about summer! I love the South Carolina heat (the humidity isn’t all that pleasant)! I love getting started in my gardens and watching what unfolds over the summer. Spectacular flowers and a few things to eat. I love being outside and the warmth of the sun. The songs of the tree frogs and the dance of the lighting bugs. We have a Whippoorwill that nests out back and I love listening to his calls while we rest out on the deck. I love the yard sales and flea markets! We have two Ten+ mile yard sales every year in our local area! Who wouldn’t love that!
I too was thrifting when thrifting wasn’t cool! I have enjoyed your blog and seeing your great pieces of work. Your work inspires me to go out and try something new… and I must say I have tried, with my own spin of course, just about everything you have shared with us. Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing your talent.
    Happy Creative Week,
    Dar

  24. What I love most about summer is that it is over so that fall can begin!

  25. I LOVE summer. I love the colors, the heat and all the growing things! The end of summer brings on a little melancholy for me. But, I hang on to it as long as I can with fresh flowers in the house and trips to the Farmer’s Market for good produce.

  26. As everyone has said, there are so many things to love about summer. I love the smell of fresh made blackberry jam, family reunion and the sound of the little children down the street playing . I could go on and on, but it would only be repeating everyone else. I have made a few flower plates, but none so pretty or ornate as the one you are giving away and I’m going to use your flange idea and hang it on a fence if I win.

  27. How beautiful! I believe that red glass plates like that were often given as 40th anniversary gifts as that is/was considered a “ruby” anniversary.

Summer … I have enjoyed it so much this year. New Hampshire summers are so beautiful, it is almost worth the long hard slog of winter. One thing I enjoyed hugely this summer was our gorgeous lakes. My young grandkids were visiting from faraway, landlocked Nevada. They were able to experience, for the first time, the joys of getting a head start and running into a lake. It was a joy seeing summer here through their eyes.

  28. Kathy Nielsen says:

Summer is always so green here in Oregon. The contrast of the blue sky, cows and sheep in the fields and green, green trees. Unfortunately, this year of fires, kinda dampens the spirits. All hoping for more rain. Need I say more.

  29. I live in Utah. Last year was so hot – over 100 degrees for way too many days. This summer has been cooler and wetter. My garden has loved it. It has been nice to sit on the porch as the sun was going down, rocking and drinking iced tea. This has been a great summer.

  30. I like summer mostly for the flowers. I have not enjoyed the heat here in Va. due to the high humidity and we haven’t had much rain where I live….therefore, I have had to tote water to keep my flowers alive. I just love your garden plate flower! I just started making glass plate flowers myself this summer and thoroughly enjoy coming up with different solutions. Thanks so much for sharing with us!!!

  31. I love your eye, absolutely gorgeous! I look forward to your posts every Monday!

  32. Lynne Bridge says:

What I love most about the summer begins in the spring with flowers, flowers and more flowers. They represent our Lord smiling radiantlyat us, don’t you just see it. Each flower teaches me more about beauty from simple to majestic. Also each has it’s message of cheer and uplifting flair, along with its drifting aroma.
Those lovely flowers bring our hummingbirds zipping along in competition with each other and the bees, all part of a glorious balance.
I love the warm riding excursions up our forest trails in the hills behind our small farm, which abound in foliage and wild flowers of our NW rainforest.
This woodland area we live in offers also an abundance of color with the flowers, ferns, hanging mosses and towering evergreens, that never cease to calm my mind and remind me God is in control .

  33. What I love about summer most…is knowing Fall is not to far away! Spring and fall are my favorite seasons! Frankly, I have to admit, I don’t like summer very much at all! I love your glass flower. I am amazed at all the things you create… with the oddest things….that are just laying around. You have quite a talent and I admire that!

  34. I love the longer days, sitting outside at night, ice cream, and not having to rush all day.

  35. Love this flower and would love to have it.

  36. Stephanie says:

Oh, what a beautiful giveaway, Tuula! Your creations are simply the best! 🙂 What I love about summer… so many things. I love playing baseball with my husband and son and I love the warm mornings and being able to sit out on the porch with my cup of coffee.

Thank you for having such a sweet giveaway. Hugs to you!

  37. Summer is the time I get inspired to do yard art and your site supplies me with plenty inspiration. I would be honored to win the flower for my garden. You inspire us to use what we have or find at almost nothing to create beautiful things.

  38. Summer Time fun for me is a season filled with gardening & enjoying my fruit trees and berries I planted many years ago. Also brings longer days that when I can spend with my family at home or walking on the board walk in MBSC …We like riding the sky wheel & just watch people having fun as the family is all together !!!! Thanks for the give away…

  39. Love this pretty flower… It is going to look so lovely in someone’s garden… Truly the thing I love most about summer is spending time with my family. My daughter is now grown and in college, working 2 jobs and sometimes flying halfway around the world to do an internship. The time I get to spend with her just hanging out is priceless. And I adore spending time with my husband. The best is when all three of us are together at the same time….

  40. The thing I like best about summer is, whilst working on my veggie allotment, I can stand, take a break, and marvel at the poppies in the farmers field. Sadly the have a short life, unlike the awesome poppy garden ornament you have created! I know the perfect place for it, outside my garden room which overlooks the whole garden, and it would take pride if place in front of the lavenders. In the winter it would be the “star turn” in my garden room surrounded by complimentary plants to show it off! How wonderful to have “summer in winter” whilst beyond the windows might be snow, or rain, or dull cold days. Good luck everyone!

  41. I love just about everything about summers in Arkansas except for the heat. I love the time away from my work (I work at a public school), I love time with family & friends on the lake, I absolutely LOVE fresh garden veggies, and the summer crickets singing me to sleep at night. LOVE the beautiful garden “flower” you’ve created! It would look adorable in my Mother’s flower bed!

  42. Summer in Reno is ever changing. Beautiful, green, cool night even with hot summer days. The best time of summer comes in September. Incredible mid 70-80 degree days with 40-50 degree nights. And the early evening hours are heaven sent. But I don’t want to let the secret out about how fabulous Reno is. Too many people moving here already! LOL

  43. Lisa Schramm says:

What I love about summer….sunshine! I live in the Seattle area, so to see the sun in the morning is a great start to the day. We have a lot of gray here in Seattle the rest of the year

  44. I love your garden art – this piece is spectacular. Does flattery get me anywhere :>)))

  45. Wow, what a spectacularly beautiful garden dish flower! I love summer best of all the seasons here in Michigan. I love the summer heat, the singing frogs, working in my gardens, summer flowers. Most of all I love just being outdoors in the summer.

  46. lori malhoit says:

Summer is my favorite season..I get to play in my garden, swim naked in my pool, sit on my deck watching all the lizards sipping cold sweet ice tea. I love the warm sunshine, everything is lush and green- so many different colors of green! You beautiful flower would look at home in my yard that is filled with wonderful yard art..Much rather be outside than in the house!

  47. I love the extra time, off from school, to do fun, spur of the moment things with my precious grandchildren! Teaching them to garden, take walks and explore the beauty outdoors. Playing with the garden hose on a hot day, making sure all the farm animals have plenty of shade and water! Going to their ball games, camping by the creek, listening to the “noises” and then the sound of them all sleeping peacefully!

  48. Kelly swiggett says:

    That is really beautiful.

  49. Leslie McCoy says:

Summer…yeah, steamy, buttered corn on the cob and sweet, juicy watermelon! That plus air conditioning is summer to me!

  50. Thank you so much to everyone for all your wonderful comments. This giveaway is closed.
