Bed Tray with Magazine Holder Makeover

I hopeΒ you’re having aΒ great weekend so far.Β Me, I’ve been busy spray painting my day away, working on a few projects and being so into it that I completely lost track of the time. I love it when that happens! It’s good to lose track of time sometimes.
One of my makeover projects today was a bed tray that I boughtΒ a few monthsΒ ago from my local thrift store.
I do a lot of readingΒ and writing in bed andΒ I’ve always wantedΒ one of theseΒ bed trays with the magazine holders on the sides. I don’t actually read a lot of magazines, but I do read a lot of books.

ItΒ was off white and a little dirty, and some of its spindles were a little bent, but it wasΒ stillΒ worth every cent of the $5Β it cost me. I gaveΒ it a good cleaning and a light sanding.

Then I gaveΒ it a light coat of a white spray primer (that’s what I had on hand)Β and two light coats of a fabulous pink.
It took some time and patience because of all the spindles in the side magazine holders. HereΒ it is all watermeloned up. The colour name sure is accurate. I love it!

Here’s the fabric I used. It’s a P. Kaufmann “Sugar Baby” Paisley that I bought off of ebay some time ago.

I cut out a piece of thick cardboard to the size of the insert in the bed tray and cut out the fabric to wrap around it. (I keep a stash of cardboard pieces from behind pics, frames etc for times just like this when I need them.)

I ran double sided tape around the edges on the back of the cardboard and wrapped the fabric around to the back.Β Because I used the tapeΒ it’ll be easy to change the fabric whenever I like. I left someΒ of the tape exposed on the back soΒ it would adhere to the tray when I laid it in.

HereΒ it is all prettied up!

I’m so happy with it! But then again I have a thing for colour.

I was thinking of adding an apple green just toΒ theΒ rim around theΒ topΒ and then distressing it a bit to let the pink show through. What do you think! Would that be too much? As if I’ve ever been accused of too much. Who me? Never. πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for reading!

  8. Love this one too πŸ™‚ That fabric is awesome!!

  9. Lovely! I’d like to try this with my bedtray, but my fur babies think I got it for them. It’s on my bed with the magazine holders holding cat toys, cat combs & brushes, & various things to try to keep up cat fur on sheets. One sleeps underneath, one on top, and the other 2 wherever they like on the bed!

    1. lol. I can so relate Devra. We have four cats too, and they do tend to take ownership of things we bring home too. Sometimes I think they rescued us and allow us to live here instead of the other way around. πŸ™‚
