Cat Litter Cardboard Box Makeover with Wall Stickers

This cat litter cardboard box makeover is super easy and inexpensive

You can repurpose cat litter cardboard boxes to create sturdy storage by giving them a quick and easy makeover.

I never thought that having cats would help me out in the storage department. But one day a couple of months ago, I was having trouble breaking down a couple of cat litter boxes for recycling and I thought, hmmm… these boxes are super strong. And right then and there this idea was born, which honestly I should have thought of years ago.

Better late than never.

Cat Litter Cardboard Box Makeover

We’ve always had cats and we buy several different kinds of kitty litter, depending what’s on sale really. Here’s one box. I already had ripped the lid flaps off, which rips off the top off the openings for grabbing.

Before using a cat litter cardboard box for storage make sure to get all the cat litter out of the box. I hold the box over the kitty litter container, remove the tape on the bottom, shake it out, and then tape it back up again. Easy peasy.

Cutting the Cardboard Box to Size

Once you’ve decided how far you want to cut down the box, use the utility knife to cut the corners down to that spot.

The design on this box made it easy to cut down. I just cut at the edge of the red area.

Until my box looked like this. I wanted to cut below those two unusable openings on the sides.

Covering the Cardboard Box

To easily give my cat litter cardboard box its makeover, I’m using these faux distressed white paneling wall stickers that I found at my local dollar store. They also had them in brown, but I prefer the white version. They were $3.50 a pack and each pack contained eight 4″ x 24″ easy peel stickers.

I used these same wall stickers for my metal filing cabinet makeover.

There were three different patterns, here’s two, and I mixed them up as I went.

Here’s my box finished. For this cat litter cardboard box I used just six of the stickers. This is so easy. You just apply the stickers in a way that looks good to you. I went horizontally, making sure the ends of stickers didn’t all meet up at the same place. I wanted it to look kind of random.

Securing the Wall Stickers

I overlapped the bottom slightly with the stickers, and to make the edges more secure I covered them with clear packing tape.

I did the same for the inside edges of the box.

Here’s a different and larger cat litter cardboard box, which still has the openings in tact. All I did here was cut off the flaps.

How to Cut Around Hand Holes in Box

I cut slits into the wall sticker and folded it into the inside of the box. Then I used clear packing tape to secure it in place.

And here’s that finished box. I covered it exactly the same way as I did the first one, but because this box was bigger it took eight of the wall stickers.

These wall stickers were opaque enough that you can’t see through them. They cover the boxes beautifully.

This was such a fun and easy project. These cat litter cardboard boxes allow for so much storage in my craft room, and they’re super strong.
