Create an easy mini ornaments Christmas wreath

I’ve always loved making wreaths for all times of the year and for all occasions, and this mini ornaments Christmas wreath was such a fun project. The one thing I can’t get enough of at Christmas time, is lots of glorious colors to make the season smile.

There’s no better way to get in touch with your inner Christmas child than to up the fun factor in your Christmas decor. And for me that always means lots of happy colors.

Everything for this mini ornaments Christmas wreath came from my stashes. I’m really trying to create projects with things I already have rather that thinking of projects that I have to get supplies for. It feels good to be using things that I’ve had hanging around for awhile, and some of those have been hanging around for a long while.

Like the mini plastic ornaments that I’m using in this project. I’ve been collecting them for a quite few years now for a someday project. When I was going through my Christmas crafting bins I pulled them all out and decided that someday had finally arrived. I’ve found them at thrift stores for next to nothing, especially just before and after Christmas when it gets marked down to 50% off or more. These small ornaments range in size from 3/4″ to 1 1/2″ in diameter.

I guesstimate that the ornaments in the photo above probably cost me about $10. The reason I know that is because I’m cheap, I mean thrifty, and won’t pay more than $1 for a bag of plastic ornaments, and usually it’s 50 cents. I did a quick count and there’s about 260 ornaments here. I counted a few times and came up a little different each time, so again I’m guesstimating.

I’m using plastic ornaments totally on purpose because I’m not a fan of making projects with glass ornaments because of the breakage factor. But that’s just my thing.

To create my mini ornaments Christmas wreath I’m using a $1 thrifted 13″ styrofoam wreath form from my stash. I rarely buy my craft supplies at regular craft stores because I find so many things at thrift stores.

• lots and lots of mini ornaments (I used about 210)

• glue sticks
• tinsel garland
• wire for hanger

Organizing your mini ornaments

To create a wreath like this the most important thing to do is to organize your ornaments. This project goes much faster if you can see all the ornaments you have to work with laid out in front or you. I used the underside of a large plastic bin lid that had an indentation around the perimeter that made it easy to compartmentalize different sizes and colors.

I started on the inside of my wreath form by gluing the ornaments all around in a way that looked good to me. I pointed the ornament caps down and into the wreath form.

To make sure the ornaments are really secure I added some extra hot glue around the caps at the back of the wreath.

I went around the outside of the wreath form next, and I secured the caps at the back the same way as I did the inside.

Then I did a second layer around the inside and the outside. I removed the caps for this because they add extra bulk that was helpful for the bottom rows, but they just get in the way for the rest of the areas.

I should mention that I did a dry fit in each area at each stage before gluing just to make sure there weren’t any big gaps between ornaments.

In order to make adding ornaments to the top of the wreath in a random way easy, I needed something to cover the styrofoam. So I used a piece of a lovely $1 thrifted cream tinsel garland from my stash. It was still in the bag that I found it in years ago so using some of it was long overdue.

Adding the garland lets me arrange the ornaments where I want them without worrying about the styrofoam peeking through.

And I think it adds a nice texture and a little extra sparkle.

There really is no wrong way to do this. It’s all about what you think looks good. I just winged it as I went.

To add a hanger I twisted a piece of heavy wire and poked it down into the styrofoam about an inch deep. Then I pulled it out and added hot glue to the wire and put it back in the hole. Then I added some glue at the entrance of the hole as well. Since the ornaments are all plastic this wreath is very light so this should hold it just fine.

I absolutely love how it turned out, and I figure it cost me between $9 and $10. It’s similar, but at the same time completely different to the full size DIY ornaments Christmas wreath that I shared a few years ago.

Now I’m not going to lie. Even though this project was relatively easy it did take me some time. About four hours after I organized the ornaments and was ready to start. But it’s the perfect way to slow down for a minute and spend a Christmas crafting afternoon with some Christmas music playing. And when you’re done you have a lovely wreath to hang for the season, and for many seasons to come.
