DIY Pencil Holder from Sifter Decoupaged with Stamps
Create a unique DIY pencil holder
This diy pencil holder is a fun storage solution and it’s a pretty easy project.
Storage doesn’t have to be boring, and using vintage kitchen things for projects like this is something I love to do.
Like with my muffin pan drawer organizers, and my bakeware craft room storage.
To make my pencil holder I’m using a bunch of stamps left over from the decoupaged stamp table that I created for my living room.

ย And this vintage sifter, which I’ve had for eons, is a great candidate for this stamp project.
NOTE: I am not a stamp collector. I purchased these used stamps specifically for crafting purposes.
To create my diy pencil holder I’m using DecoArt Paper decoupage medium, and a foam brush.
I make my foam brushes last by rinsing them well in warm water after each use.
There’s no need to toss after each project when cleaning is so quick and easy. This brush has lasted three projects so fa, and is still looking good..
Vintage sifter decoupaged with stamps
I started by applying a coat of the decoupage medium right onto the sifter along the bottom.
This way I can start the stamps at a straight line and work my way up.
ย
Before applying the stamps onto the sifter I gave them a light coat of the decoupage medium on the back.
Doing this makes them easier to work with and also toย move around in place.
ย
I used my fingers to press them in place and smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.
ย
Here you can see how I’m moving my way along and up at the same time.
Because the stamps are small it makes it easy to work them into place over the raised parts of the sifter.
How to decoupage diy pencil holder with stamps
When I reached the top rim of the sifter I applied the stamps. letting them extend over the edge, and let them dry.
I tried not to apply any medium along the top rim.
ย
When the stamps were dry I trimmed the top with an xacto knife.
Make sure the knife blade is very sharp so you get a nice clean cut, and very light pressure is all that’s required.
ย
After giving the whole thing a light coat of the decoupage medium and letting it dry, I gave it a light sanding with a fine grit sanding block.
Make sure to clean off any sanding dust with a tack cloth or a slightly damp cloth.
ย
To stop the metal mesh inside the sifter from getting damaged by pen and pencil tips, I put a small aluminum jello mold inside.
You could use a plastic or glass bowl, or whatever else you can think of that will fit.
I repeated the sanding and decoupaging process three times so I had a nice strong finish on my diy pencil holder.
ย ย
Just for fun and because this is a vintage sifter I left the raised embossed GEM logo visible.
ย
If you look closely you can see how the stamps have taken on the contours of the sifter.
Mixing the colors and sizes of stamps gives it a more interesting look, sort of like a mosaic.
Technically it could still be used as a sifter because the inside hasn’t been touched, but I wouldn’t just in case some of the medium got on the inside accidentally.
This sifter will be enjoying its new life as a diy pencil holder.
