Easy DIY Thrift Store Tray Makeover
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve spent the last couple of months going through my stashes and doing some major purging.
Thank goodness I have some great thrift stores in my area that I love to donate to.
I love to buy from them as well, but I’ve been restraining myself. lol.
Once I was done purging, and I am done for now, I promised myself that I would try to dedicate myself to doing as many stash busting projects as I can with the things that I decided to keep.
This is one of those projects. Everything I’m using for this tray easy makeover came from my stashes.

I’m joining a bunch of creative bloggers for the Do It Over Designers blog hop. We don’t always have a theme, but this time we do… and it’s paper! Such fun! There are endless project possibilities for creating with paper and I’m sharing my project with you first, and you can find links to all the talented creators at the end of this post. Be sure to visit and check out all the fabulousness. I’m sure you’ll be inspired!
Easy DIY Metal Tray Makeover

For my project I’m upcycling a simple 25 cent thrift store metal tray that I’ve had in my stash for quite a while. I actually found three of them at the same time, and I’ve already used one for this DIY Owl Owl with Fall Leaves. The last one is being saved for a future project.
This metal tray is very ho hum, making it a perfect candidate for an easy and fun and floral makeover.
Supplies needed for this Tray Makeover project
- Metal tray
- piece of scrapbook paper
- spray paints in colors of choice (paint and primer combos)
- scissors
- pencil
- decoupage medium
- foam brush
- brayer
- Goop adhesive

To dress up this tray I went through my scrapbook papers and found a lovely floral design. The goal is to inset the paper onto the flat middle part of the tray inside the scalloped area.
I used this same scrapbook paper for my wall clothes rack makeover, and my DIY wall art from thrift store canvases.
It’s just so summery and it makes me smile.

Here you can see the scalloped design from the bottom view of the tray.
Cutting the scrapbook paper to fit inside the metal tray

To get the proper shape for the scrapbook paper I placed the piece right side down on the bottom of the tray. Then I ran my index finger along the edge of the scallop, and followed that with the lead of a pencil as I went. To keep the paper in place I taped it to the tray at the top and bottom.

I went a little too quickly in a couple of spots, which is where you see some corrections. It’s helpful to try to go slow, but booboos are also easy to fix so it’s all good.

And voila! It fits pretty well. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Spray painting the metal tray

We had a couple of warm days here so I took the tray outside and gave it two coats of an aqua paint and primer combo spray paint.

Then I did a dry fit of the scrapbook paper piece.
Decoupaging the scrapbook paper onto the tray

To add the scrapbook paper piece to the top of the tray I used a matte Mod Podge and a 1″ form brush.

After adding a coat to the tray I placed my scrapbook paper piece on top and used a brayer to flatten it down. I used my fingers around the edge. I didn’t do a top coat until I was done with the brayer. You can’t use a brayer when it’s wet.

The top coat goes on white, but it dries clear. I did three coats of the matte Mod Podge on top and bottom of the tray. letting it dry in between. I didn’t get a picture of this, but I used a plastic sandwich bag to smooth out any bubbles that appeared. By placing your hand inside the bag you keep your fingers clean.
Adding feet to the tray

I went into my stashes and found these four wooden drawer knobs, and I thought they’d make perfect feet for the tray.

I spray painted the knobs with a couple of coats of a hot pink paint and primer combo to match the floral scrapbook paper. Then I glued them on with GOOP adhesive.

The pink feet aren’t really very visible, but I think elevating a tray just gives it a little extra something.
Easy DIY Thrift Store Tray Makeover

Here you can see the before and after. That’s the last tray of the original trio on the left. The floral tray just seems to have more substance to it. It definitely has more personality.

I’m super happy with how my tray makeover turned out. I’m still debating whether or not I want to put something around the edge of the paper, but the cutout fits the shape very nicely so it’s not really necessary.
This was such a fun and easy project, and it cost me next to nothing because I used things I already had. The creative possibilities for a project like this are pretty endless, depending on the paper and spray paint that you decide to use. And decor style and color scheme could be easily matched.

Your tray makeover looks fantastic Tuula! Seems like a lot of us are on a stash busting mission this year. Glad the weather cooperated so you could spray this outside; you really can’t beat a sprayed finish. I really like the cutout as-is; it fits beautifully. But if you decide to add something around the edge, maybe a touch of gold could enhance it without overwhelming the design.
Thanks Sara! I think a touch of gold is a nice idea. Winter is back now, but we did have a few spring-like days to enjoy. It was perfect timing for this project.
What a great project and fun way to decorate an old tray – and in your favorite colors, too! Decoupage is one of my favorite techniques!
Thanks Gail! Decoupage is one of my favorite techniques too. It makes it so easy to create total transformations.
This is so fun!! I adore the colors and the way you layered the paper inside. I have a few of these trays and they have been hanging out in my craft room for far too long. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Kim! Pinks and aquas are one of my favorite color combos.
I agree Tuula, feet always give a little something to a project. I am always so amazed with what people find at the thrift store, the stores in my area are not the best, and they are so expensive now. You did an excellent job getting the paper to fit the inside of the tray, I know it is not always so easy to do. Love the colors and paper you chose, this turned out adorable, and just in time for spring!
Thanks Cara! Yes I am lucky with the thrift stores in the small towns around me. They get so many donations that they want to sell things quickly. I do sometimes see things I think are overpriced, but not too often.
You certainly gave a plain tray a new look using some leftover scrapbook paper. I love the colors and reminds me that summer will be here soon – I hope!
Thanks Ann! I do love summery colors and I hope it will be here soon. I’m not really a winter gal.
What a fun makeover, Tuula. I love the addition of the feet to the tray; it changes the look altogether.
Thanks Anita! It was a fun project.
What a fab tray makeover, it looks so much better. I have a few of these trays knocking around somewhere, now I know how to make them look much better!
Thanks Julie! It’s amazing what a little paint and some pretty paper will do.
I am loving how this turned out – perfect for spring! Your bright and cheery paper, the spray paint, and especially the “feet” to this to another level!
Thanks very much Patti! And I’m hoping spring arrives soon. 🙂
Very cute Tuula, your projects are always so colorful and happy 🙂
Thanks Tania! I definitely need colorful and happy inside this time of year to offset the dreariness outside. It works!
I love the bright colours you chose for this tray. It’s such a fun piece of decor now.
Thanks Rachel! It does make me smile.
I like the addition of the colored knobs for feet. Even the bright blue just makes the colors in the paper just pop. Great idea.
Thanks very much Donna!
