Faux Iron Mirror from Rubber Door Mat

Faux Iron Mirror from repurposed rubber door mat

This is a fun and easy way to create a faux iron mirror from a humble, but pretty with potential, repurposed dollar store rubber door mat.

I found this rubber door mat at a dollar store a while back… a couple of years ago actually.

I think it’s a pretty universal pattern, so if it’s not at your local dollar store you’ll probably be able to source it somewhere else.

I’ve always been attracted to curlicues and scroll work, so when I saw this I had to bring it home. I just knew that someday it would get a new repurposed life.

And today’s that day.

Drybrushing the rubber door mat

To give this rubber door mat an easy makeover I decided to give it the dry brush treatment. All I needed was an old brush, and some white paint.

After you lightly dip your brush into the paint, you just dab it off on some paper towel or newspaper. Whatever you have on hand, to remove the excess paint.

Then you lightly brush the surface until you’re happy with the way it looks.

There is no wrong here, it’s just about what you like.

The reason to use an old brush you don’t care about is because you have to get into all those nooks and crannies, and this can wreck a good brush.

This does take a while, but the end result is so worth it.

The dry brushing really pulls out all the lovely details of the door mat, which you couldn’t really see when it was black.

I already think it looks one hundred times better, and you could hang it just like this as a piece of faux iron decorative wall art.

But I wanted to add a little something extra.

Adding faux mirror magic to rubber door mat

faux mirror silver foil sheets

I had these two faux foil mirror sheets in my craft stash, and I thought this was a perfect project for them.

All I had to do was tape them onto the back of the door mat. I did this using gorilla tape.

I only wanted the faux mirror to be in the middle area, so I placed the first faux mirror sheet in place.

So that the the overlap of where the two sheets wouldn’t be visible from the front, I cut the first sheet into shape.

Then I taped it in place.

Then I added the second foil sheet and taped that into place.

And here’s what my faux iron mirror looks like after the foil sheets were attached.

It’s laying on my craft desk here, and you can see my hot pink craft room ceiling reflected in the mirror.

Hanging the faux iron mirror

And here I am taking a picture of it in the guest room. It’s not too heavy so it’s hanging from two small finishing nails. I hung it vertically because that’s what the space needed, but it could be hung horizontally as well.

The faux mirror does reflect the light in the room… in an antique speckled mirror and fun house mirror combo kind of way.

Works for me. lol.

You could add the foil sheets to cover the whole back if you want to.

But I like the way the wall color comes through to frame the mirror section.

This faux iron mirror project is an easy way to add a piece of decorative wall art to your space.

You could dry brush the door mat with any color you love. I chose white because it’s hanging in my aqua guest room.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would pin this project to your favorite Pinterest board, and also share it with your friends.
