Finds of the Week #46: First Yard Sales

So John and I went out for breakfast this past Saturday, like we usually do, and on our way to the Salvation Army thrift store afterwards we actually saw two yard sales.

Yay! Yard sale season came early this year!

And I was lucky enough to find a couple of things that I listed last week on my Top 5 Things to Look for at Yard Sales.

blue enamel teapot and cup with caption

Although I didn’t have enamel pieces on my list I do love them, especially when the colour is so clear and bright. The cup has some chipping, but the teapot is in great shape. These are a sell.

wooden cafe sign

Signs or word thingies weren’t on my list either, but this wooden sign was a must buy for $1.

It’s a keeper and will definitely be getting a makeover.

vintage toothpaste and toothbrush drawer pulls

Drawer hardware is never something I’m looking for but if I see something fun and unusual, like this toothpaste and toothbrush drawer pull set, I’ll pick it up.

I think it may be vintage because the newer ones I see in this design are smaller and hollow at the back. These pulls are just under 5″ long and they have solid backs. The set is for sale here.

Paris Moulin Rouge oil painting

Although not in my Top 5 I’m always looking for oil paintings that speak to me, and I fell in love with this $3 impressionist streetscape of the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

It looks like it was painted on a piece of plywood.

I’m a big fan of impressionist art, and I absolutely love the colours. I can’t quite make out the artist signature so I’ll have to do more research on that, but I love it anyway.

I only wish this 9″ x 11″ piece was larger… much larger.

Now for the two things I found that were on my list.

vintage silverware spoons and knives and silver tray

First… the number one thing was silverware, and I got a pretty good haul considering it’s not even supposed to be yard sale season yet.

The silver tray, which can always be used for a plate flower or a wind chime, was a bonus.

vintage wooden crewdrivers

And my favourite find, also on my list, are these wooden handled screwdrivers. They were $1 each, but I got six for $5. It seems that red was a popular handle colour back in the day.

I have a few red ones already, but the more the merrier. 🙂

I love that I already found some great things… and this was Saturday so it wasn’t even May yet! Who hoo! I hope this is a sign of a fabulous yard sale season to come.

Have you been out to a yard sale yet?

Thanks so much to you for reading, and until next time… keep on keepin’ on.

  6. Wow! You were at the right place at the right time! No yard sales yet but four church rummage sales last week! Lots of great stuff for my Etsy shop and new booth!

    1. Church rummage sales are awesome! We don’t usually see those until summer. It must be fun to shop the sales for the booth now too.

I HAD my first yard sale. It seems my tiny little town doesn’t have many, so when one comes along, it gets swamped! We brought things from our last house because having a yard sale there wasn’t feasible. Here, we have a single car garage. I was able to take my time to sort, price and arrange. My garage was stuffed! We had a great bit of traffic and made a great deal of money. There are plenty of good leftovers, so I will be going through my boxes of decor (that I didn’t go through for the first one) and have another in the fall. I will also send some things on to the charity thrift store. We live in North Carolina, so we get to start our yard sales a little earlier in the year than the folks to the north. Here’s to garage sale/yard sale season!!!

    1. I’ve never held a yard or garage sale myself, but I’ve been going to them since I was a child. Here’s to yard/garage sales season!!

  10. Great first yard sale outing. Finding two things on your list is fantastic. Even though vintage tools were not on my list I would have bought those screw drivers too.

    1. Thanks Sharon! It was such a bonus. Never even thought I’d get to a yard sale already. Hopefully there are more this weekend.

  11. What fantastic finds! I love the cafe sign and the oil painting.

My hubby and I don’t go out for breakfast every Saturday (wish we could) but we very often have a coffee date at Dunkin’ Donuts on the way to other errands on Saturday mornings. We go out for breakfast once or twice a month.

    1. Thanks Mrs. T. I don’t often see real oil paintings in the thrift stores around here and I really loved this one. Saturday morning coffee dates sound fun. 🙂
