Tuula from Thrift Rebel Vintage

Welcome!  I’m Tuula, and I’m so happy you’re here. 🙂

Do you struggle with creating your home’s decor on a tight budget? Do you think you can’t have a unique home, filled with colors that you love, because you don’t have a lot of money to spend?

I believe there’s no can’t in decorating. There’s only endless creative potential that’s just waiting to be discovered.

With a little bit of money and a whole lot of , reusing, repurposing, and reimaging you can create a home that smiles.

No matter where I’ve lived I’ve always had to deal with an almost non-existent decorating budget because other things always came first, like the everyday bills of real life, but that has never stopped me from creating homes that I eventually loved.

And it doesn’t have to stop you either… no matter how small your budget.

How do you do this?

  • By changing the way you see things so you can start turning negatives into positives.
  • By giving yourself permission to fearlessly express your one-of-a-kind creative self, rather than following fickle trends that come and go.
  • And by re-imagining the home you’re in instead of wishing you were somewhere else… like in that perfect dream house that you may never find.

I know what that’s like because I’ve been there.

Don’t let that imaginary house of your dreams stop you from creating the “real” home of your heart.

Years ago, back in the late 1980s, my husband John and I bought our first house. It was a very modest 3 bedroom 1 ½ storey, and I wasn’t very happy with it at all. I felt decoratively inadequate, and was always comparing our little house to what I saw in decor magazines and on decorating shows. Our house didn’t look like any of those houses, and it bothered me.

I was having trouble even starting to decorate because I was afraid of doing something wrong.

Sound familiar?

Thankfully one day I had an epiphany, and I realized that our house wasn’t supposed to look like those other houses because they belonged to someone else. It was ok, and actually so much better, if our house looked like it belonged to us. Right then and there I decided to embrace our little house, imperfections and all, and I started doing my own decorative thing. Glorious color and all!

I discovered there’s no wrong in decorating… there’s only what feels right to you.

That’s when I created my first “real”  home.

I stopped thinking about not having the very best, and I started enjoying making the very best out of what I had.

And I still do that to this day, and you can too!

Color Me Thrifty is all about repurposing thrifted finds, reusing and upcycling what you already have, and rethinking pretty much everything to do with diy home and garden decorating. My hope is that I can inspire you to create a home that you love by decorating it in your own unique way. There are always going to be people who will tell you that you shouldn’t do this, or you shouldn’t do that.

Trust yourself and don’t listen to them. And rest assured that I will never be one of them.

There are no shouldn’ts in decorating… there’s only what makes your heart happy.

The majority of project ideas that I share can easily be changed up and customized so you can make them your own. I don’t expect you to do exactly what I do, or to love exactly what I love, but I hope you’ll be inspired to be free with the colors that you love, go crazy with fabrics that tickle your fancy, and do whatever your heart desires to create a home uniquely your own.

You can start right now no matter where you’re living; an apartment, a bungalow, a mobile home, or a century old two-storey yellow brick farmhouse like my current redecorating project… where I live in Southern Ontario, Canada, with my husband John and 3 rescued feline project assistants… Salty, Monkey, and Pixie, who think they rescued us and allow us to live here.  They’re probably right. 🙂

When it comes to home decorating I know what it’s like to over think and second guess.

But don’t let your practical head stop you from following your inspired heart.

I know that’s not always easy. After all these years I sometimes still have to tell my head to be quiet so I can do what my heart knows is right for me.

Your home’s decor isn’t about your friends and neighbors, or what you see on TV shows or in your favorite decor magazines. It’s really all about you, what you love, and what brings you joy.

You can color a home that smiles. I know you can!

So throw away all the can’ts, the wrongs, and the shouldn’ts… and embrace your one-of-a-kind awesome self and do what you love.

Live a life that smiles my friend, and…

keep on keepin’ on!
