In My Dreams

So the other night I came up with my most fantastically awesome idea ever!!!

in-my-dreams

And then I woke up. lol. Well… sort of.
It was the middle of the night and I told my dreaming half-asleep-self that it would still be there in the morning… oh yes… and I believed myself!!! I actually remember saying… in my head… to my dozy self… that the idea in this dream was just too good to forget. And I went back to sleep.

Can you believe that?

So I didn’t get up and write it down.

And when I woke up in the morning… it was gone. Poof! Just like that! Right out of my slowly waking brain.

This isn’t the first time this has happened to me. My dreaming self seems to think I concoct my best ideas when I’m unconscious. It may be right.

But if these really are good ideas for the conscious world that my awake self actually lives in wouldn’t I be able to remember them in the morning? I do remember some of my dreams… usually the ones that are totally nonsensical or absolutely terrifying.

I think my sleeping self likes to mess with my awake self.

Maybe when I woke up in the middle of the night I wasn’t really awake at all!

Maybe I was just dreaming that I woke up!

Maybe I was just dreaming that I was asleep and dreaming about my most fantastically awesome idea ever!!!

Maybe I’m dreaming right now!

Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Edgar Allen Poe

Good question! I’m starting to wonder.

So now there’s a note pad and a pencil in my night table so my dreaming self or my half-asleep-in-the-middle-of-the-night self can WRITE IT DOWN!!!

I kid you not. I’ve taken to mining my dreams for ideas. lol. Is that crazy or what? Hey… whatever works… right?

I can’t wait to start a post one day with the words “It came to me in a dream.” Sounds so literary… almost poetic don’t you think?

I just thought of something… if I ever see an idea written on that note pad when I wake up in the morning how will I be sure which one of me wrote it? lol.

Hmmmm.

Well, if it turns out to actually be my most fantastically awesome idea ever… I guess I won’t care.

And you all will be the first to know. Bet you can’t wait for that. lol.

I hope I’m not the only one this happens to. Have you ever dreamed an idea for a project?

Have a dreamy Halloweeny!

  1. Hey Tuula, I don't know if I'm dreaming or what but I am constantly thinking about ideas while I'm in bed. I don't sleep well and I'm waking up throughout the night thinking about what I could do. Don't know if this helps me but I wish I was sleeping instead of thinking. I need the rest.

  2. My brother-in-law is a psychologist and he always keeps a pen and paper by his bed for this purpose. He recommends that his clients do the same thing.

  3. I do the same thing with the notepad and pen. It has worked before. Good dreamin!!

  4. Go for it Tuula! I think you better craft up that notepad and bling up that pen for some extra inspiration! I'll look forward to that post that starts out that way!

  5. This isn't crazy at all! Many creative people including me do this. I started keeping the pad and pencil handy at the suggestion of a therapist years ago. I find that sometimes if I am stuck on a plot twist for something I am writing especially, that the resolution often comes in a dream.

  6. I agree with Danni – a notepad in pink and green with a silver something for bling. I wrote a prize-winning first chapter of a novel the other night. Don't remember a word of it.

  7. I totally hear ya Tuula – some of my best ideas come in my sleep and some of my best ideas are lost upon waking. Sucks doesn't it!

  8. Oh Tuula. You make me laugh. I loved this post. I also love that you said your sleeping self is messing with your awake self. The notebook and pen next to the bed is brilliant. I can't wait to hear about what your dreams inspire.

  9. Good luck with writing it down! I have dreams and can't remember details at all! Thanks for sharing at TTF@!

  10. I used to keep pen and paper by the bed and better start it again. You always think you will remember in the morning. sigh
