The Key

Sometimes I think we forget that we have the ability to change our lives at any time.
A new day is a new opportunity to make things happen, rather than just letting things happen to us.
I wrote this poem to remind myself that no matter what’s going on in life, that each and every day can be a new beginning… if I choose to let it be.

The Key

The day is done.
Another day has ticked by you
like twenty-four hours
of glass.
Each moment as fragile
as a single grain of sand.

It trickles away,
grain after single grain,
becoming another possibility
that slipped,
unnoticed,
through all the invisible cracks
in this noisy life.

Another chance
to pilot the tide of time
is lost.

Listen. Listen.

Life also speaks in whispers.
Life also sings in silence.
It’s just a heartbeat…
just a breath…
just a single grain of sand.

It burrows deep into  sleep,
digging
through all  your hidden layers
until it has dug down,
far enough down,
to awaken
a sleeping dream.

You can raise it to the surface,
bring it out into the light,
or you can leave it
forever buried
behind the locked door
of your true self.

The key to your destiny
was not lost
in the sands of time.
It’s been in your heart’s pocket,
waiting.

So sleep now. Sleep.
Let your soul dream.

The past is your bed.
The present is your blanket.
The future will be knocking
on your locked door
in the morning.

How will you choose to answer?

by T. M. Lehtinen (that’s me)

Whatever your sleeping dream may be,
it’s never too late to use your key.

Thanks so much for reading, and until next time…

keep on keepin’ on!

    1. Thanks Dona! You're too sweet. That pic was taken 5 years ago on an Alaskan cruise. When I started my blog I had a terrible time picking a photo because I don't like being in them much. I really should get an updated one. Hopefully the 5 years haven't aged me too much. Thanks again for the ego boost. You're the best!

  9. Gosh, Tuula, you really hit the nail on the head with this one, or should I say fit the key right into the lock;) The meaning is so true. It's amazing how much time we waist as a species. I will be thinking about your words this week as I try not to waist so much time. Sharing this, my rockin' poet friend!
