Using an upcycled vintage tablecloth is an easy way to create DIY kitchen art to match your own decor style.

Kitchens aren’t just practical places for storing food and preparing meals. They’re also where we spend a lot of our time, so it’s nice to decorate them with things that make us smile.

One of the fun things about thrifting is rescuing things that have seen better days, like the $1 vintage tablecloth that I’m using in today’s project.

It has some discolored areas, that I tried to get out but failed, and also a few holes here and there. I’m sure that’s why it was so inexpensive. In perfect condition it would probably cost $20 or more.

But then I wouldn’t have the heart to upcycle it. So sometimes it’s better to find things in damaged condition rather than perfect. At least for this thrifter.

I was immediately attracted to it by the red and white polka dot edging, and then when I opened it up I fell in love with all the fun and colorful graphics.

Just perfect for my aqua and red kitchen.

I found two beige colored wooden frames in my stash that were the perfect size for where I want to hang them.

Upcycled Vintage Tablecloth

See what I mean about the graphics, and each corner has a different saying.

This vintage tablecloth offered endless possibilities for upcycling, and I’ll be keeping the parts that I don’t use in this project for future projects.

There are so many little details in the graphics that it’s just so much fun to look at.

It was hard for me to decide what to use for this kitchen art project, but I did finally decide on two of the corner sayings.

Now, before I get started I have to say that this project was caused by Pepper, our sweet but rather mischievous-at-times black cat. Years ago I gave a makeover to the frames of these three chair pictures and hung them above our aqua china cabinet in the kitchen.

Then Pepper showed up and pretty much adopted us, and we discovered very quickly that she has a thing for wanting to see what’s behind pictures on the walls.

Any pictures. Any walls.

It doesn’t matter the size, the shape, or the location; if she can reach it, she’s looking behind it. Why? We don’t have a clue. But she’s such a sweetie, it doesn’t really matter why. We just have to make the house safe for her, and worry-free for us.

So needless to say we don’t have pictures with glass anywhere where Pepper’s paws can reach them. The three chair pictures were donated to the thrift store, and the three picture hangers were up there for some time just waiting for something to hang there again.

Then I found this fabulous tablecloth, and inspiration struck.

I took the two wooden frames outside and spray painted them with two light coats of a vibrant red, front and back.

Then I used the frame as a guide.

This was so much easier than measuring and marking. I just cut around the frame to get my vintage tablecloth piece.

I cut two pieces of cardboard from my stash to fit the frames.

And then I simply wrapped the tablecloth piece around the cardboard and taped it down. Then I slid it into the back of the frame. Both frames still had a few of the nails to hold the new art pieces in place.

And here’s the first finished piece of kitchen art created from an upcycled vintage tablecloth.

Since the graphics in all four corners were the same, I shifted the location of the second piece so that they looked a little bit different.

I hung them on the same hooks that were there above the china cabinet, but then I needed something for the middle. So I grabbed my repurposed cutting board sign from another kitchen wall, and it fit perfectly.

And wouldn’t you know it.

About 10 minutes after these easy kitchen art pieces were on the wall Pepper was up there checking them out.

Looking so innocent. lol.

Until.

I’m telling you she just can’t help herself! lol.

Thankfully now there’s no glass to be worried about, and she can check behind the pictures to her heart’s content. The picture hangers will hopefully hold them in place, but if she does manage to pull them off the wall there will be no harm done.

Upcycling a vintage tablecloth is an easy and inexpensive way to add some fun and colorful DIY art to your kitchen space, and it’s really pretty easy to do.

Actually, this DIY art can easily be created for any room in the house, depending on the tablecloth that you choose to upcycle.
