What the Heck Is It? #3

Happy Friday friends!

what-the-heck-is-it-2a-new

So last week you guys figured out that my mystery item was a vintage Dilly candle holder, and once I knew what it was I was able to do some research and find some similar pieces.

I went through my candle snuffer collection to see if I could find one to fit but I don’t have one short enough.

So, I think I’ve found another use for that hook.

The only thing I still don’t get about this piece is why it spins, but I guess that will have to remain a mystery.

This week’s mystery item comes from the 25 cent gadget bin at my favourite thrift store.

It’s a  6 1/2″ long metal thingamabob with a wooden handle.

Are those little arms on the sides supposed to hold something?

This one has me stumped.

What the heck is it?

Thanks so much for reading and until next time…

keep on keepin’ on!

  1. A wild guess….if the 2 thingies held a wire….maybe a cheese slicer? Other than that, no idea. Some of your other readers, that will study on it harder, will have to help!! Dona

  2. Is it a lid lifter for heavy pots or pans? Wild guessing here!!

maybe it could be a thing that would grab the lid of jars when canning to get the jars out of the hot water bath

  5. ColleenB.~Texas says:

I would also say a cheese slicer; missing the wire

  6. I think it is a pot holder( corning ware) that latches on the side of a square type pot

  7. I think it’s a toaster tray handle, for a grill on an oven

      I agree with you Wenda!

  8. Hello. I believe it is to help lift up your pyrex dishes/casseroles from the oven. You hook it on the edges and it makes it easier to get out. I think.

  9. Marlene Daniels says:

Hubby said it’s a cheese slicer, but is missing the cutting portion.

  10. Definitely not a cheese slicer or a Pyrex/Corning Ware casserole holder. They both have very distinct designs and this is nothing like any I’ve ever seen. I agree with Karan that it may be some type of heavy lid holder or a prop perhaps. I’ve googled it six ways to Sunday including the words cast iron in some searches and must have scrolled through 1000 pics and coming up with a big old NADA. lol The confusing part for me is the little “arms” with one not connecting as the other does. The bottom curve up and the upper angle down would guarantee a solid grasp on a heavy cast iron lid however, dutch ovens have their own design of lid movers. Sure is perplexing!

I think it’s either a pot handle as previously mentioned but it looks like the handles used on my deep fat fryer so my guess is it’s some sort of handle for a kitchen thingy. Possible canning apparatus?

    Hey Tuula,
I knew it looked familiar. This is used to remove the hot grill rack and baking tray from the “toaster” oven.
I love researching this stuff. Thanks for the fun afternoon! Love ya’

  13. Although I’ve never done any canning, I really think this is a gadget to lift the jars. Fun game!!!

  14. An instrument used to latch onto your husband’s arm in the grocery store to drag him away from the Krispy Kremes. Of this I am certain.

  15. Thanks so much everyone for all the great suggestions and comments. Now that I’ve got some ideas of what to google I’ll be doing some more research on this one.

  16. I guess I waited too long to comment and the mystery item is almost solved! I agreed with Karan right away, if that helps!!

    1. Thanks AnnMarie! I never would have thought that’s what it was. Now I need to try it out.
