To make over or not to make over?
That is always the question when I find a treasure.
My gut instinct usually has no trouble answering this question, but sometimes it doesn’t help me at all.
Like when I found a vintage Syroco clock a while back.
I shared my find here on the blog and some readers shared great ideas for what to do with it, but I still couldn’t decide.
But sometimes fate has a way to making decisions for you.
Here’s the plastic resin clock as I found it for $5 at my local thrift store.
Pretty awesome, right?
Love the size and shape, but not crazy about the finish.
Well, here’s how it looked after fate pushed it off the wall.
This clock is very light so I thought hanging it on a penny nail that was already in the wall would be fine.
Not so much.
One evening we heard a crash and we rushed into the living room to see the clock had fallen, and it hit the large metal bin where we keep firewood.
E6000 glue to the rescue.
Thankfully all the pieces were salvageable.
And unlike Humpty Dumpty I was able to put this clock back together again.
Fate may have broken my clock, but when this happened my mental block about what to do with it magically cleared.
So rather than cry over the broken clock, I seized the day and decided to give it a whole new look.
I removed the hands from the clock face.
And with painter’s tape and a little piece of plastic I covered it before taking it outside to spray paint.
Before I show you the finished clock I’ll show you what I did with the pendulum.
It doesn’t work, but it’s totally cool to have it anyway.
To give the pendulum a makeover I needed some DecoArt paper decoupage medium, a foam brush, a pencil, and scissors.
I printed a black and white photo on just regular paper and traced around it with the pendulum.
Here we are, John and me, w-a-a-a-y back in 1988 during a ride in a hot air balloon.
I have a thing for black and white photography.
It just does it for me. I guess it’s the vintagey look that it instantly gives to any photo.
Here’s my photo after I cut it out to fit.
I applied a light coat of the decoupage medium onto the spray painted pendulum…
… and also onto the back of the paper photo.
I placed my photo onto the pendulum, smoothed it out quickly with my fingers, and let it dry.
After it dried I applied 3 light coats on top of the photo, letting it dry in between.
And with a little help from my glue gun I added a piece of a broken rhinestone bracelet to frame the photo with a little bling.

John and I just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary so this is a little tribute to us.
I love putting photos in unexpected places.
Here you can see how my aqua blue spray painted clock looks in the living room beside one of the windows with my no sew scarf curtains.
This clock has a much happier vibe now, and it really pops on the white wall. It took three light coats of spray paint to cover the clock.
I have a thing for vintage clocks and have given several others makeovers over the years like this red hot vintage clock makeover, and this vintage starburst clock makeover.
You can find all the clock projects that I’ve shared here.
Thanks so much for reading, and until next time…

I too have had many opportunities where fate has played a huge part in my decision making. I think you and your friend “fate” made a great decision and it turned out wonderful, everything looks so nice together!
Thanks very much Pam! Fate is my partner in many projects it seems. 🙂
Aww, what a cute picture of you two! The clock turned out great, I’m glad it wasn’t broken beyond repair!
